COGNITIVE MAPPING

PART A/B

This project involves part A and part B. Part A is a 5 pages A4 to note down the 5 elements found in KL Sentral and Brickfields Area. The study reference is based on Kevin Lynch, The Image of the City(1990). After a day spent in KL Sentral and Brickfield area, we are then asked to map out the edges, district, paths, landmarks and nodes in the city. This helps in forming an image of the area based on our memory. This is then led to project B which is an essay writting based on the cignitive map I drawn.

Project B requires student to produce a cognitive mapping of selected places to understand people's perception and spatial behaviour of the city today. Through the cognitive mapping, we can notice the emergence of contemperary urbanism in Kuala Lumpur city center.

Besides, we are required to write sinopsis based on each readers. Such as Jane Jacobs, "The Death and Life of American Cities" (1961), Diana Agrest and Maria Gandelsonas, “Semiotics and Architecture: Ideological Consumption or Theoretical Work”(1973) , Juhani Pallasma, The Geometry of Feeling A Look at Phenomenology of Architecture and lastly Kenneth Frampton, “Towards a Critical Regionalism: Six Points for an Architecture of Resistance, No 5 & 6” .

Theory of Architecture and Urbanism really amazed us with those theory based experiments on people behaviour towards a city. Forming a city image based on the human patterns and how the both interrelating to the environemnt context. As an architecture students, throughout readings, we can really gained some firm knowledge in supporting our design ideas and concept.
