Project 1 introduced us to a gateway design. In consideration of environmental issue and poetic sense, we are then develope a basic knowledge before the final. The structure is located at an open area near the futsal court,Taylor's. Applying ideas of environmental sustainability and creativity, the structure should provide both a shelter and a suitable rereational activity for the students to get away from the hectic study lives.
The ‘GATEWAY’ is to be based on the following requirements:
1) Volume: 300 m3 (min 2 storey)
2) To serve TWO main purposes:
a) Students’ activities areas
i) Indoor games room
ii) social space b) Security surveillance
i) Security Station ii) Watch Tower
There is no restriction on structure design or materials to be used nor shall budget constraints other than the unit be practical, useful and manageable in terms of its operations and upkeep. Project must demonstrate sound construction and good understanding of building economics. Responses to the site and existing context and access requirements are essential criteria and consideration in the design.
The Paramount, inspired by the site contour, provide student a new experience of 'rock climbing'. The climbing structures
directed to a picturesque view of Taylor's University, is a great spot for a gateway from hective school life.
NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE
Gateway to Royal Belum
Project brief
This project requires students to propose a facility accommodating several related functions such as exhibition, learning and recreation in a suburban context. Students are to develop their own concept for the design based on their research of the area and environment. This working method is intended to have the student design in near full-freedom; however they will be required to make an informed response firstly to the surrounding context. Their capacity to respond architecturally and contextually to this task will form part of the basis upon which they will be marked.
Site Location
The site is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. Pulau Banding is a 243-hectare man-made island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. The Island sits amidst the 130 million year-old Royal Belum Rainforest, known for nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements.EMKAY Group, the owner and caretaker of the Island, envisions the development of Banding Island as a vital introduction to Royal Belum State Park and aims to position it as a premier heritage destination on the world ecotouris
Being inspired by the site history, and the purposely cut contour for army training centre, here comes my design of the filling up the slope and in between spaces.
By filling up the middle empty space with a semi-open gallery with creepers all around the structure, reminding visitor of the emptiness of the site and the growing of new lives at the site. Along the walkway, there's plantation happening. These plantation plays a very important role in filling up the emptiness.
Having both side of spces aimed on both side of forest, upper forest and lower forest(flooded with dam), symbolizing the unit of two separate spaces by having people circulating around, forming a unity instead of segregation.
