Project 1

Shelter for One

 

The objective: 

1) To create an understanding of skeletal structure and its relevant structural components. 

2) To understand how a skeletal structure reacts under loading. 

3) To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how a skeletal construction works 

5) To be able to manipulate skeletal construction to solve an oblique design problem. 

 

 Learning Outcomes: 

1)Apply constrcution system in design 

2) Recognize the implication of constrcution system in design 

3) Analyze the issue of strength, stiffness, and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and law od static. 

 

This project allowed us to build a one to one shelter using different joint and material in order to sustain a 60 kg weight lifted up from the ground. A lot of problems was met throughout the process such as error in measuring and error in cutting. This lesseon had taught us to be cautious in every step you took as every single step might cause failure in constrcution like the last straw of haystack. 

 

 

 

 

It also remind me of the team work in constructing the shelter. Building up a shelter is like buidling up a buidling, it cannnot be done by an individuals as more brain is better than one. Time arragnement is also crucial in organizing a building project. Therefore, lesson learnt throughout this project will be a fundamental experience for our future career. Lastly, thank you for all the lecturers for their guidance throughout the sem. :)

 

Project 2

Forces in Solid & Surface Strcuture

 

The objective of the project: 

1) To create understanding of solid structure and surface strcuture and its relevant structural components.

2) To understand how a solid structure and surface structure reacts under loading. 

3) To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how solid  construction and surface constrcution works. 

4) To exploit the qualities inherent in solid construction and surfac constrution. 

5) To be able to manipulate solida construction and surface construction to solve an oblique design problem. 

 

 

This project we had chosen Pantheon for the surface and solid constrcution. It amazed lots of architecture for its first dome construction in the world. THe struture of the dome surface involve a lot of wisdom. This knowledge had been discovered thousand years ago, to build a surface dome with concrete and stone. The constuction of the wall was based on the Roman traditio of building it, the higher the lighter. Therefore, a lot of feature added into the dome, acting as a device in reducing the weight of the piece, in order to stand still through decades or even century.

Group Part

The above Drawings showed coffer construction in the dome, used to lighten up the weight of the dome and to distribute force equally throughout the dome. It also served as asthetic purpose.
