Journey of the 5 Senses
Memorial
Project 1a
Precedent Study
Studio III involves a series of exposure towards senses. Introduction of poetic senses to the building design. Throughout several projects, we are taught to 'feel' the building as well as constructivity. Beside poetic feeling within the building, spatial organisation also one crucial consideration while designing a building because it informs human's occupation, behaviour and experience with the architectural spaces. Therefore, in studio III, we are thinking beyond the design concept, reaching out consideration of function and spaces required. It is an nteresting journey as it bring us nearer to the architecture real life.
PRECEDENT STUDIES:
Analysing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture 5% of final mark
The objective of Project 1a is to identify and analyze spatial order and spatial poetics through precedent studies. The main aim is to analyse 2 selected architectural precedents. Each group of students is to analyse the spatial poetics & spatial typology of the selected precedents. The analysis of the design approaches will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester. Thus, the selection of precedents should be critical and inspirational.
TASKS
In groups of 4-5 students, select 2 precedents for analysis. They can be local, national and/or international examples. One precedent must be PRE-MODERN MOVEMENT, and one precedent must be CONTEMPORARY. Also, one precedent must be LINEAR, and the other CONCENTRIC. Record your analysis on multiple sheets of A3 butter paper. The precedent study should provide the following analysis:
SPATIAL TYPOLOGIES
1. State and describe the spatial typologies applied in the design
2. Explain how the spaces are organised and ordered
3. Explain how the typologies ordered the use of the design See Francis D.K. Ching’s Form, Space & Order & Purves’ Formal Patterns
SPATIAL POETICS
1. What is the design considerations employed to explore spatial poetry/poetics/experiences?
2. How are the spaces articulated in terms of the poetics, sensuality and tactility of architectural spaces?
3. Flow of experience (identify key circulation/journey).
4. Using at least 5 images/perspective that illustrate poetics of space, analyse how the experiential space is created: Engagement with senses; Manipulation of light and its effects on space (natural & artificial); Texture and materiality; Scale and proportion of spaces etc 3, Plan-Section relationship
5. Co-relate the plan to one of the most interesting section of your selected building. Study the section and analyse how it is designed. Comment on the relationship between inside/outside, volumes and scale of space, variation and hierarchy of spaces See Steven Holl’s Questions of Perception: The Phenomenology of Space & Juhani Pallasmaa’s The Eyes of the Skin
Linear Architecture | Chi Chu Art Museum
We took Tadao Ando's work , Chi Chu museum for our linear precedent study. It is an underground art museum located at an isolated island in Osaka,Japan. This art museum is special at its loaction at underground, with different size of openings/ skylight in order to invite lights into the building in a poetic way. The whole journey is full of stories interrelated to the art work displaed. The way Tadao Ando treat the buidling with the site surrounding amazed me. The whole underground journey start with narrow corridors with dim light and slowly changed to brighter and wider place, and finally it ended up at a cafe, with sea view framed by him. It gave a sense of celebration at the end of journey.
Concentric Architecture | Fujian Tu Lou
For the concentric precedent study, we took an anchient historical building which still stand still until today. It's TuLou located in the Fujian province in China. Here lived a whole family who served the same sir name. Living in a big community, space organization played an important role to ensure comfort. A circular arrangment of space for the living neighbourhood and the center point for the ancestors place form the whole Tulou. By having a thick bearing wall, the safety is ensured and ready to sustain for the next generation.
Project 1b
Memorial
Project 1 b is required for us to imply the knowledge learnt from precedent study in the memorial design. The memorials are dedicated to ministerof Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew who had just passed away and for the victims of Lahad Datu based on the land priority issue between Malaysia and Philipines. For Lee Kuan Yew's , the concept is framing the sky which indicate he as the sky will always protect the people as a guardian whom contribution is at infinity just like the sky. Guiding and leading people to the celebration at the top level, where nearest to the sky(Lee Kuan Yew). For the memorial of the Lahad Datu issue, linear concept is implied to it. By having diffent planes with openings, indicating broken pieces of the sacrifisation of the soldiers towards their motherland. However, these broken pieces form a whole picture of the motherland view if look from the end, indicating they are not just died meanigless, but return back to the motherland.
Genius Loci
Lembah Bujang
In project 2, genius loci is introduced. Society, culture, history , memory and the landscape of a particular places echoes the meaning of the place known as genius loci. These qualities will inform the architectural concept and generators for project2. Relationship between the building and the site play a strong engagement. Therefore, a site analysis need to be carried out.
Site Analysis Link
From the site visit, inspirations are everywhere to grab for the preparation of the next project(concept development). Therefore, inspirations are recorded in terms of sketching. We had been to different site, such as the main Batu Pahat Candi museum, the Excavation site at the Bujang Valley which was used to be a port, a construction site where candi is destroyed without known. Throughout journey if different site, everything that ispired me had been recorded in my sketches below.
The sketches above showed a process of life cycle. Everyhting in life will underwent the process. Thing grows with the basics, where starts from root which ready to grow into a big tree or there's raw stone which ready to turn into a significant artifacts. Then thing will experience a golden period where the glorious part of the life. In the sketches, blossoms of flower which seen in the mangrove plantation is drawn and for the sketches of the artifacts made up of raw stones were onced been cherished by the usher. However, thing will then turned to be ignored throughout the journey of time. Decay taken place and some vanished. It can be seen in the sketches of abandoned house located not far away from the candi Batu Pahat and the decy of mangrove tree. Therefore, it's time for the preserve period to be happened after receiving so much lessons from the past. The sketches of the mangrove tree trunk being placed as a column in the museum and the candi sketch being preserved by the authorities.
The life cycle the inspired me of how the life actually began with. From the site visit, in the Batu Pahat candi , in the middle of the candi, there's a hole which called Yoni is where they used to place the Lingga stone in the hole as a representation of born of life. After several research in Hinduism belief, life can only exist where there's two opposive element which combine into one. Therefore, we have female and male which can give birth, sky and earth which create endless of lives in within. Therefore, this became my concept throughout this concept form development and my following final project.

Visitor Interpretive Center
Introduction
Project 1 introduced and explored the formal and poetic articulation of architecture in a site-less condition. Project 2 established a design concept as a driver for archietctural development. In project 3, the design brief calls for an interpretive center emphasizing a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements.
Design Brief
The interpretive centerwill serve 2 purposes:
1) To provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture\history\memory\essence fo the site.
2) To provide accomodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.
Solution relying heavily on landscape are encouraged. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express teh spirit of the place.(genius loci)
Room Requirement:
1)Reception
2) Foyer\Public gatheirng space
3) Display\Exhibition\Gallery space
4) Book\Souvenir Shop
5) M&E\Utilities space
6) Office
7) Toilets
8) Pantry\cafeteria
9) Storage
10) Designer's space
Further developement from project 2b, concept is refined in relared to the site context. In the site, Lingga is missing without yoni, the 2in one combination had now became one. The urge of searching for something is an interesting experience in architecture. It creates interaction between the architecture and the ushers just like Tadao Ando's architecture in searching light within the building. The Lembah Bujang site seemed so separated, everything within the site is found to be different individuals. The two water sources where the begin of civilisation and the reason of constructing the candi had been ignored and forgotten throughout the years. Therefore, by implying my concept into the site, the two water source is having relationship with my building.
Two opposing element concept is implied in my building by creating two different experience space. One would enter the visitor center with fully exposed to the water source and nature, one can see, feel , and play with the water. However, when entering second space, the sound is gone and silence came. It is an indoor gallery.
The two opposing spaces are then came into one connection point which loacted in the middle of the level. It's where the cafeteria will be loacted, a place where people relax and communicates. Different thoughts will be exchanged here, and with the view of the water, may be a good reminder to the user in cherish the gift from god for our next generations.
