History and Culture
In a group of 4, students are required to conduct a percedent study analysis on a specific historical building through drawings, model making and online forum discusiion and verbal presentation.
This percedent study should help to clarify WHY teh soecific building is historcally, culturally and architecturally important and HOW the design concepts derived from that particular building can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into studio 1 design orojects.
Focusing on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas through the study of existing buildings, students may be able to communicate their own architectural idea and design for studio 1 .

The analysis board of Durham Cathedral
There are six area of analysis for this percedent study. My part includig analysis of the orientation of Durham Cathedral, symmetry& balance, axes, hierachy, repetition to unique and addictive&subtractive. This percedent study made me more understanding about this building and all the details location of each place within the cathedral. The historical story behind the cathedral also made the building more interestig to investigate. The structure within the building amazed me a lot due to the olden advanced technology applied to the construction of certain structure such as the ribbed vault. I finally realized every part of teh building had its own reason behind in order to make the building standed throughout the century.
About the model making, it was really an interesting part of the assignments. Before starting to make the model, we had been through a very detailed analysis on the location of each part of the cathedral and how would them look like, so that the model we constructed would look exactly the same as the orginal one. Throughout the working process, I had been taught a lot of skills in model making by my groupmates especially when cutting those detailed window frame and flora patterns. Throughout the team work, we learnt to be tolerant and forgiving.When different opinions occured, we will discuss and the best solution will be chosen. Throughout the whole process, we had undergone a lot of problems, and luckily all had been solved due to efficient teamwork.
